The purpose of this meditation is to develop the strong wish to rely upon a qualified spiritual guide, and then to meditate on this wish in the light of equanimity.

I began by doing some standard breathing meditation to calm my mind before moving on to the main contemplation.

I thought about all the benefits of relying upon a Spiritual Guide, and specifically the benefits that come from receiving the blessings of all the Buddhas through him. I developed a very simple but very profound feeling of receiving countless blessings, and the more I relied, the strong the blessings felt. I focused on this feeling of receiving blessings for the rest of the meditation.

After a while I decided to see what this meant in the light of equanimity. I thought about how in the equanimity meditation we deliberately abandon belief in the outward appearance of others and free ourselves to relate to them with a warm and friendly feeling. I thought about how we should recognise that our Spiritual Guide should not be regarded as a normal human being, but rather an enlightened being. I felt a very warm and friendly feeling towards him, and then returned to me feeling of receiving the blessings of all the Buddhas through him. It was wonderful.

May all living beings find their Spiritual Guide and rely upon them wholeheartedly.  May they be shown the path to enlightenment and may they follow it until they too are enlightened beings.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will keep my mind of reliance alive for the rest of the day, and try to feel him with me in everything I do.
