The purpose of this meditation is to generate the wish to act virtuously and to shun non-virtue because of our understanding of the law of karma, and then to consider this wish in the light of the fact that all living beings are our mothers.

I started by settling down in the quietest part of the busy house, and doing some breathing meditation. At first my mind was very jumpy, but I just relaxed and kept focused on counting my breaths, and after a few minutes I felt my body slowly relaxing, and my mind becoming more settled.

Once I was properly settled, I began my contemplation.

I started by thinking about how all my experiences are caused by my past actions. I thought about how everything that will happen to me for the rest of the day will be caused by my actions in the past. It struck me as very ‘just’ that I have to experience what I have created. This thought was actually quite comforting in a strange way.

I decided that from now on I will react to situations with a positive and calm mind. That way I will experience the negative karma I have created in the past, and it will be gone. I will also not create any negative karma to experience in the future. I developed a very stable mind where I believed I could cope with anything that I will experience in the future. Whatever happens I will react with a clear, open, accepting and positive attitude. I imagined my mind being clear like a diamond, positive and stable – able to survive any obstructions and suffering. It was extremely positive and pleasant – I felt like I was bulletproof! I stayed with this feeling for a while.

After a while I decided to see what this intention meant in the light of the recognition that all living beings are our mothers. I thought about it for a while and two points seemed to become important. Firstly, by reacting in only positive ways, I am protecting my mothers around me from unhappy feelings caused by my negative reactions. Secondly I am creating positive karma which will help me attain a state where I will be able to help them find true permanent happiness in the future. With these two points in mind, I returned to my wish to only behave and react in positive ways. I stayed with this wish for the rest of the meditation.

At the end of the meditation, I felt as though I was completely able to deal with any situation which life can throw at me.

May all living beings understand the law of karma, and with this understanding, behave in the ways which will lead them quickly along the path to enlightenment, for the benefit of all.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will watch the horizon for circumstances which could possibly cause me to act in negative ways, and prepare myself by reminding myself of the law of karma, so that when the time comes, I will react in positive and helpful ways, for the benefit of myself and others.
