The purpose of this meditation is to purify our negativities and strengthen our compassionate actions, and then to meditate on this in light of the kindness of others.

I began with some breathing meditation, calming my mind and focusing my attention.

After a while I moved on to the main meditation. I recapped briefly my Great Scope meditations up to this point, reminding myself of my cherishing love for all living beings, and their suffering. I remembered my meditation from yesterday where I sought to protect all living beings from the causes of their sufferings.

Now I decided that enough is enough – I need to act to remove the suffering of others. I pictured all the beings in the wheel of life, and imagined that through the power of my concentration and virtue, all their negative karma rose out of their bodies like black smoke. As the smoke left them, they became free of their suffering for the first time since beginningless time. I took the smoke into my body and brought it into my own heart, where it destroyed my self-cherishing mind.

I realised that I was free. With no self-cherishing, worldly concerns were of no interest to me at all. I was not concerned with praise, reputation, resources or respect. My happiness came from within – from my inner peace. I was free.

I stayed with this feeling for some time before moving on to the next step.

I then thought about what this means in light of the kindness of others.

I returned to the feeling born out of the recognition that all living beings are free from their suffering and that I am free from my demon of self-cherishing.I thought that I had some something towards repaying the kindness of others. In past lives and in this life, they have cared for me and cherished me. They have done their best to help remove my suffering. Now I am repaying their kindness by removing their suffering – how wonderful!

May all living beings come to take the sufferings of others, destroy their demon of self-cherishing, and quickly attain enlightenment for the benefit of all.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will imagine taking the sufferings of everyone I meet, and them becoming free from the causes of their present and future sufferings completely.
