The purpose of this meditation is to generate the strong with to walk along the spiritual path, and then to meditate on this wish in light of the disadvantages of self-cherishing.

I began with breathing meditation, and then moved on to the main topic.

I started by reviewing to obvious truth that in general, positive acts give rise to positive results, and negative acts give rise to negative results. Buddha proposed that this rule holds true not just for the experiences we can associate directly with actions, but for literally every experience we have, both positive and negative.

In Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso gives a masterful overview of how karma works and the actions we need to avoid, most of which are included in the ten non-virtuous actions. Everything is here, and I felt like Geshe-la had put everything ‘on the table’ so to speak. It is my choice as to what actions I perform and what path I tread.

If I tread the virtuous path, I will definitely experience the virtuous results of liberation and enlightenment. If I tread the non-virtuous path of the ten non-virtuous actions, I will definitely experience the suffering of rebirth in the lower realms for countless future lives.

I felt like the choice was obvious and I was filled with the desire to walk the virtuous spiritual path, shunning non-virtue, and purifying the negative karma I have already created. I imagined myself walking along the path to enlightenment, and with each footstep, ripples of light emanated into the ground and purified all my negative karma, which filled the entire universe. I felt like I was making progress and purifying my karma – moving forward. I focused on this meaningful feeling for a long while.

I then thought about what this means in light of the disadvantages of self-cherishing. For a negative action to be complete, it needs to be performed while under the influence of delusion. More often than not, self-cherishing will be in the mix of negative motivations for negative actions. As my self-cherishing is a main cause of my engaging in negative actions, I must abandon it as soon as possible – it causes so many of my problems.

I returned to my wish to treat the spiritual path, and abandon self-cherishing at the same time. I focused on this wish for the rest of the meditation, my mind filled with a clear feeling of spiritual progress and confidence.
