The purpose of this meditation is to generate the strong appreciation of the kindness of all living beings, and then to meditate on this appreciation in light of the advantages of cherishing others.

I began with breathing meditation, with each exhalation thinking ‘my mind is deeper, more settled’. After a short time, I found that my mind was very well settled and peaceful.

I then started to think about the kindness of my mothers of past lives, who are the living beings around me right now. When they were my mother, they cared for me with great tenderness, sacrificing many things for my benefit. I thought of their love for me, and how that love was so strong that it still reaches me through the kindness of others. Such strong love can never end, and finds its expression now in the countless kindnesses I experience every day.

I visualised each of my mothers from the past and their love as a very bright light. This light passed up through the years to shine through all living beings alive now, and bathed me in a beautify warm light of love. I felt surrounded and pervaded by love, and I focused on this feeling for a long while.

I then thought about what this means in light of the advantages of cherishing others.

It seemed to me that the way in which I begin to repay the kindness of my mothers is to cherish them right now. Each and every living being has been my mother in the past, and I can start to repay their kindness by cherishing them all with my whole heart. With this recognition, I returned to the feeling of remembering the kindness of my mothers for the rest of the meditation.

May all living beings remember the kindness of their mothers, and through this rememberance develop the wish to repay that kindness, and embark on the path that will lead them to the state of unsurpassed happiness and peace.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to recognise the kindness of others which is so obvious when one looks for it.
