It is several years since I heard that one meaning of the word ‘Dharma’ is ‘protection’.

It has taken a while for me to appreciate the truth of this. I am sure that as time passes, I will continue to understand this on deeper and deeper levels.

Just recently, some of the people dear to me have been having a hard time. I have tried to help them as much as I can, but there is only so much that I can do. To them, the suffering they experience seems to come from the circumstances they find themselves in. But to me, I can see clearly that their suffering is really coming from their own minds.

Dharma is the only true protection we have from life’s sufferings.

When we study and practice Dharma, there are some tough truths we need to understand, such as our mortality, and the dangers of self-cherishing. But once we have reconciled ourselves to these truths, they become our protection.

The stronger our understanding and faith, the stronger our protection becomes. Until we come to believe that there is nothing life can throw at us that we cannot handle.

True Protection.
