The purpose of this meditation is to generate the belief that we are giving complete happiness to all living beings, and then to meditate on this in light of great compassion.

I began by dissolving the Guru into my heart and settling my mind as his mind.

Then I thought about my wish for all living beings to be truly happy. I imagined my body having the nature of a sparkling jewel, radiating pure light. I imagined the light spreading throughout the universe, touching all living beings. As the light touched them, they experienced pure lasting happiness – a happiness quite unlike any they could find in samsara. I imagined how they felt, and felt it myself. I focused on the feeling of being in the centre of the radiant circle of light with all living beings around me – with all of us experiencing beautiful happiness. It felt like pure happiness was welling up inside my heart, like my heart was the font of all happiness. It was really very beautiful, and I focused on this feeling for a while…

I then moved on to think about what this means in light of great compassion.

As with yesterday, it seemed to me that giving happiness was giving the true heart’s desire of all living beings, just as taking was taking away their sufferings – their other deepest wish. With this in mind, I returned to my meditation on giving, and the feeling of true lasting happiness welling up from my heart and radiating outwards, touching all living beings without exception.

May all living beings feel the protection of giving, and in that space, develop into complete Buddhas, for the benefit of all.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to give happiness to others, with actions, with a smile or just with a good thought.
