The purpose of this mediation is to transform our mind into a mind of cherishing others, and then to see what this mind means in light of the practice of taking.

After calming my mind with breathing meditation, I moved on to the main meditation.

I started by thinking about how all the happiness in the world comes from cherishing others. I simply focused on this thought and developed a strong wish to cherish all other living beings. I thought about all the people I have seen today, and I tried to cherish them as I relived my day. I settled on a lovely feeling of cherishing others.

I then thought about what this means in light of the practice of taking.

It seemed to me that if I cherish others I will have no obstructions to taking on their suffering and to help them in any way I can. With this in mind, I brought back the thought of cherishing others and focused on it for the remainder of my meditation.


May all living beings cherish others, who have no faults, until they attain enlightenment for the benefit of all.
