The purpose of this meditation is to generate the sincere wish for all living beings to find true lasting happiness, and then to consider what this means in light of the practice of taking.

I began by letting the tension in my body slowly dissipate through breathing meditation and then I mixed my mind with my Guru’s mind, feeling his stability and stillness as my own. I felt completely centred at my heart and I stayed in that feeling for a while…

After that I began by remembering that all living beings are my kind mothers. How kind they have been to me in the past, and how kind they still are. They are searching for happiness. All they can find is artificial happiness – transient, hollow, unsatisfactory happiness. Thus, they continually find disappointment instead of happiness – how tragic.

I developed the thought that humans are wandering around close to the path to happiness, but not finding it. I decided that I wished they could find true happiness – the happiness that comes from within – from inner peace. I imagined my Spiritual Guide meditating with me, and all living beings in the form of another person sitting with us, all facing each other in a triangle. The blessings of my Spiritual Guide radiated into me and into all living beings, bestowing all the attainments of the stages of the path to enlightenment. I felt a complete happiness which was shared by all living beings and which delighted my Spiritual Guide. We sat together and enjoyed the complete and perfect happiness of inner peace for a while…

After this, I wondered what this meant in light of the practice of taking on the sufferings of others.

I remembered that the practices of taking and giving are like the perfect conditions for our compassion to transform into Bodhichitta, and I rejoiced in the practice. My wish for others to find happiness is essential to the practice of giving, which is the partner to taking. Understanding this relationship, I returned to my feeling of abiding in the happiness of inner peace for the rest of the meditation.

Through the virtues I have collected by practising meditation on the stages of the path, may all living beings find their way along the stages of the path to enlightenment, and quickly attain enlightenment for the benefit of all.

I will try to maintain the wish that inner peace will blossom in the hearts of living beings, and that all happiness and joy will be fulfilled.
