The purpose of this meditation is to generate the sincere dread of rebirth in the lower realms, and then to consider what this means in light of wishing love.

I began with breathing meditation and then moved on to the main topic.

I started by imagining that Buddha was leading me through the lower realms. We started walking thought the animal realm, and although the polar bears and fluffy bunnies looked happy enough, through the power of Buddha I understood their deep confusion and ignorance. I understood that they were always on the brink of survival.

We then walked into the realm of hungry ghosts, where everything that could be eaten – had been eaten long ago. The beings we saw were constantly hungry, prepared to eat excrement if they could only find it.

We then walked into the hell realm where living beings were suffering constant unbearable pain and torment.

Buddha turned to me and asked if I wanted to experience these realms. I felt a deep dread of doing so. I repeated to myself ‘I do not want to be reborn in the lower realms’, and focused on the feeling of dread I experienced…

After a while I thought about what this means in light of wishing love. The beings in the lower realms are so submerged in suffering that they need their suffering to be removed before they can benefit from pure happiness. This made me understand the perfect order of the Lamrim objects, and the need for both taking and giving. I then returned to my dreadful fear of rebirth in the lower realms.

May all living beings understand what the future may hold, and with this knowledge turn to Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to see the lower realms about me, and dread them.
