The purpose of this meditation is to generate the very strong wish to follow our Spiritual Guide, and then to think about this wish in light of the practice of giving.

I began by making a determination to meditate on reliance upon the Spiritual Guide because it will bring me closer to my goal of attaining enlightenment in this lifetime.

I then started by engaging in breathing meditation, letting my mind become more peaceful and still.

Following this I started to think about what I am doing with my life. I have spent many years wasting my time with fruitless activities. Now I have found Dharma, and after becoming more and more familiar with it, I don’t want to do anything else. I read Dharma books at home, and I listen to Dharma books in the car or out walking. Every time I read a Dharma book I find something new. Even the book I have been reading and re-reading all year – I am still finding amazing new things in it, even though I have read it carefully several times. The book is like a bottomless treasure chest. From the outside, it has a bottom, but on the inside, I keep finding treasures deeper and deeper in the chest.

I thought about these points, and decided that this will be my life’s work – I will study and practice Dharma for the rest of my life. I felt this with absolute certainty – I will rely upon Geshe-la to show me the Dharma, and I will draw closer to enlightenment through receiving his blessings. I focused on this feeling of committing myself to the Dharma, and of joyfully practising the spiritual path.

After a while I began to think about what this means in terms of the practice of giving.

Giving means to give things that are beneficial to others. By practising the spiritual path through reliance upon my Spiritual Guide, I will do this. I felt a great certainty once more that I will never turn away even for an instant, from this excellent path praised by the conquerors. I focused on this for the rest of the meditation.

Dedication

May all living beings find a qualified Spiritual Guide who can draw them closer to enlightenment, and help them quickly to attain all the spiritual grounds and paths.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will joyfully read and listen to the Dharma of my Spiritual Guide, and put his teachings into practice for the benefit of all.
