The purpose of this meditation is to generate a strong reliance upon a Spiritual Guide, and then to contemplate the meaning of this in light of Bodhichitta, the wish to become a Buddha for the benefit of all.

I got started by making a firm decision to meditate on reliance because through this I will be able to abandon samsara and all its sufferings.

I then engaged in breathing meditation and settled my mind before continuing.

I began by thinking about my own Spiritual Guide. He will lead me along correct spiritual paths because he is a perfect guide. Today, this thought was enough for me to focus on. Perfect Path: Perfect Guide. I tried to keep my attention on this idea of being on a perfect path, helped and guided by a perfect friend. It was full of purpose and meaning, and I rested my mind on it for a while.

I then thought about what this means in terms of Bodhichitta. The Lamrim includes all the paths of the initial, intermediate and great scope. It is the complete path to full enlightenment, and Geshe-la is the complete Spiritual Guide who has attained all the realisations, and now patiently helps me to take tiny steps along it. With his help, I will complete the paths too. Just as all the previous Buddhas generated the mind of enlightenment, and accomplished all the stages of the Bodhisattva training, so will I too for the sake of all living beings, generate the mind of enlightenment, and accomplish all the stages of the Bodhisattva training. I focused on this for the rest of the meditation.

Dedication

May all living beings quickly find the inspiration of a holy Spiritual Guide, generate the mind of enlightenment, and accomplish all the stages of the Bodhisattva training.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to remember that I am on a perfect path, and at my side, for the whole journey, will be my precious Spiritual Guide.
