The purpose of this meditation is to generate a sincere wish that all living beings could be free from their suffering, and then to meditate on this with strong concentration.

I began by making the promise to myself that I would contemplate and meditate on compassion with strong effort for the benefit of all living beings, because by mixing my mind with compassion, I will become free from my own suffering, and be able to free others.

I started with some delightful breathing meditation, and then dissolving my body and mind into my heart and mixing them with my Guru’s mind. After a while of enjoying this lovely feeling of stillness and concentration, I moved on.

Suffering eyesI started by recollecting my cherishing love for others. This does no come naturally yet so I have to generate the feeling by remembering the kindness of my wife and family, and my benefactors such as my employer and clients. I then remembered how all these people are really my kind mother, and I felt closer to them.

I then thought about how I want my family to be happy and free, and I extended this feeling to all living beings. Once this was established in my mind, I contemplated their suffering. Living beings experience constant suffering. They are battered again and again by ill-fortune throughout their lives until, finally, they die, worn down and unsatisfied. I thought about how sad this is, and how wonderful it would be if they could be free from their suffering.

If I saw my daughter in pain I would instantly develop the wish that she should be free from her suffering. In the same way, I let a feeling of wanting all living beings to be free from their suffering right now. I focused on this feeling, and kept it for the rest of the meditation.

May all living beings be freed from their suffering, and become conqueror Buddhas for the benefit of all.
