The purpose of this meditation is to generate the strong wish to rely upon our Spiritual Guide, and impute him upon all appearances.

Geshe-la BlessingsI began by making my usual preparations for meditation, and then started the meditation proper by thinking about the function of my Spiritual Guide. He gives me instructions which lead to happiness for myself and others. He tells me what to abandon and what to practice. He gives me a good example. I wondered what would happen if, right now, I stopped relying on my own ‘wisdom’ and started relying on his. What would happen if I only did what he said? I would stop thinking about myself so much, and I would be happier. I would start thinking more about others, and they would be happier. I would realise that all things are just appearances, and stop grasping at them so strongly. I would be patient all the time. I would be content all the time. I would be the source of inspiration for others.

In fact, only good things would come if I relied 100% upon my Spiritual Guide. There is nothing that he teaches that would lead to suffering.

I thought about these points, and decided to try and rely upon his teachings completely. I mixed my mind with this intention for a long while.

I then thought about how I could start to see others as my Spiritual Guide. My Spiritual Guide is a Buddha. Wherever I imagine a Buddha, a Buddha actually goes. Wherever a Buddha goes, he performs the functions of a Buddha – to bestow blessings and give teachings.

If I impute Buddha upon everyone I meet, I can regard them as my Spiritual Guide. With faith, he can teach me through everyone I meet. And it is not just people – I can impute my Spiritual Guide upon all my experiences. I can ask myself ‘what is my Spiritual Guide teaching me through this experience?’. I felt like my whole life was becoming mixed with my Spiritual Guide, and that I would be able to spend all my time with him, receiving his teachings and inspiration directly from him. It was a wonderful thought, and I stayed with it for the rest of the meditation.

May we all find our Spiritual Guide, and having found them, rely upon them until we reach perfect nirvana.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will impute my Spiritual Guide on everyone I meet and every situation I find myself in, and ask myself ‘What is my Spiritual Guide teaching me’?
