The purpose of this meditation is to generate a feeling of our mind being mixed with emptiness, and then to consider what this means in terms of reliance upon our Spiritual Guide.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation, and then started by thinking about how objects exist. Forms appear directly to me, but when I examine them, all I can see is their parts. When I examine them analytically, they disappear completely, but when I am not looking at them in this analytical way, they appear complete and manifest – truly and independently existent.

behind the curtainI thought about how this shows that all the objects I see are just mere appearance, like illusions that appear solid, but are not. I imagined going ‘behind the scenes’ of these appearances, and seeing that behind these generic images, there is an emptiness out of which they arise.

I imagined becoming more mixed with this emptiness behind the generic image, and found a very peaceful and tranquil experience where I could see that everything was essentially the same. Although they appear as different illusions, they all arise out of an emptiness. I stayed looking at this emptiness for a while.

I then thought about what this means in terms of reliance upon a Spiritual Guide. The understanding of emptiness requires a skillful guide. Western philosophers have identified the emptiness of phenomena, but have not had the wisdom to make sense of it. We have the guidance of a great master who tries again and again to explain the nature of emptiness to us. How kind he is to try to expain this most subtle truth to us.

With this appreciation in mind, I returned to my meditation on emptiness.

May all living beings see the emptiness of all phenomena, and step through the door to liberation, and attain enlightnement for the benefit of all.

Practice in the Mediation Break

I will try to remember the illusion-like character of phenomena, and try to ‘see’ their emptiness behind the generic image.
