The purpose of this meditation is to generate a sincere feeling of joy at having completely removed every trace of suffering from every single living being, and also become free from suffering oneself.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then reminded myself of the fact that all living beings around me are my own kind mother. I generated affectionate and cherishing love for them, and then contemplated their sufferings.

black smokeI generated the wish for them to be free from their sufferings, and then realised that this was not enough: I need to actually free them from their suffering myself. It will not happen by itself – I myself will free them from their sufferings.

I imagined all living beings around me. A vast wind swept around them, and as it blew, it whipped up black clouds of suffering from every single living being. I imagined each one of them experiencing joy at their suffering being removed. They had not realised how weighted down they were with suffering until it was removed. They seemed to grow and fill out, as it they had been compressed in some way by all their suffering.

The wind carried the black smoke to me, and it dissolved into my heart, completely destroying my self-cherishing mind. Self-cherishing is the cause of all my suffering, so at the end of this process, both myself and all other living beings were free from suffering.

I imagined all living beings manifested as a young man standing in front of me. He was beautiful, and on his face was the most serene expression. Together we experienced the bliss and joy of complete freedom from suffering.

I felt his joy, and felt my own. It was completely beautiful, and I let it fill my mind for the rest of the meditation.

Dedication

May all living beings be free from their burden of suffering, and experience the joy of permanent freedom from suffering.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will develop the wish to free others from suffering. I will know that eventually I will be able to remove all their sufferings, and I will act in the short term, where I can, to remove their sufferings.
