The purpose of this meditation is to generate a strong feeling of reliance upon the Guru.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation, and then did breathing meditation until I was completely tranquil and peaceful.

ImageI then moved on to think about the advantages of relying upon my Spiritual Guide. Through reliance upon him, I will make my life meaningful. At the moment, my life is meaningless. I fumble around my daily life, my mind filled with scattered, disjointed thoughts – some positive, some negative. If I die today, and have chance before I actually die to consider what I have done with my life, I will see that it is mostly wasted; mostly meaningless.

But if I rely upon my Spiritual Guide I can make my life meaningful. If I imagine my Spiritual Guide is with me all the time, he will influence my thoughts and actions. If I feel his living presence in my life wherever I am and whatever I am doing, I will be mindful of my actions, and I will behave in virtuous ways. I will cherish others. I will love others. I will remember death. I will abandon samsaric pleasures. I will remember my deepest wish – to become enlightened for the benefit of all living beings. I will remember that all phenomena are deceptive because they do not exist in the way they appear. I will walk the path of the Bodhisattvas, remain happy all the time, and be of maximum benefit to all other living beings.

I will fill the unforgiving minute, with sixty seconds of distance run.

And I will reap the harvest of a meaningful life, through reliance upon my Spiritual Guide.

I focused on all these points, and I felt like my Spiritual Guide was right here, with me, and that he would be with me throughout my life, if only I would keep looking in the right direction. I made the determination to recognise the living presence of my Spiritual Guide in my life now (in meditation) and in the meditation break. He is here, with me as I write.

I settled on this recognition and joy for the rest of the meditation.


May all living beings fill their unforgiving minute with sixty seconds of distance run.
