The purpose of this meditation is to develop our practical experience of the path to enlightenment though reliance upon our Spiritual Guide.

Geshe-la with teaI began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation, and then started by remembering the sixth benefit of reliance upon a Spiritual Guide – that our practical experience of the path will increase. This reminded me of a question posted at the (unofficial) NKT Facebook Group, where Zach Wayman asked: How can I transform my daily experiences into the spiritual path ?

I thought about this and it seemed to me that the answer was that if we strongly rely upon our Spiritual Guide, he will enter our lives and be with us throughout the day. We can mentally turn to him and ask: ‘What is this situation telling me about the truth of Dharma?’, or ‘What is the appropriate action to take in this situation?’. In this way we develop our relationship with our Spiritual Guide and benefit from his influence in our lives.

I focused on this idea of being with my Spiritual Guide throughout the day, and tried to familiarise myself with the awareness of his presence. Then, once the meditation was over, during the concluding prayers I asked myself – what is the appropriate behaviour at this moment? The answer came that at this moment, it is an opportunity to develop concentration and gather merit. In this way I recognised the importance of the moment, and it seemed to me that I will be able to do this throughout the day.

Dedication

May all living beings be with their Spiritual Guide constantly, and may he increase their practical experience of the path to enlightenment.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to remember my Guru at my heart, and ask him ‘What is the appropriate behaviour at this moment?’, and ‘what is this situation telling me about the truth of Dharma?’
