The purpose of this meditation is to generate a feeling of equanimity towards all living beings.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation, and then brought to mind how living beings appear to be either friendly, unfriendly or neutral. These appearances are misleading and false, because people are not actually divided in this way except within my conceptions. Other people see others in different ways, and we can’t both be absolutely right.

Based on this I wondered what the best way was to relate to others.

gkg-gckIt seemed to me that I should be humble but confident. Humble in my dealings with others, always viewing others as more important than myself, and confident in my practice of loving kindness. I imagined my interactions with others and being interested in others for their own sake. I thought of talking to others with an aim of receiving a Dharma teaching from them. I thought – I should talk to others and see what Dharma truth they can reveal to me. In this way, I can view all living beings as manifestations of my kind Spiritual Guide.

So I made the determination to behave in a warm and friendly way towards others, to act humbly but confidently in their presence, and to look for Dharma lessons in what they say. I focused on this feeling for the rest of the meditation and if felt like I was absorbing into others, becoming closer to them. It was lovely.

May all living beings develop equanimity, and quickly progress upon the path to enlightenment.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will do as I intend – maintain an humble but confident manner, hold others as supreme, and look for the truth of Dharma to be revealed in my interactions.
