The purpose of this meditation is to generate a feeling of loving all living beings equally – equally as much as ourselves.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and the reminded myself that everything that I have came from others. I look at my house and my children and my chickens and my possessions, and I can’t find anything, not one thing that is solely mine – something that only I have produced.
Things I have provided for my family have really been provided by my employers. I am just a method of transferring value from one place to another. Even things that seem to be completely mine, such as pebbles that I collected on a beach, are not mine without the work of others, because how did I get to the beach? In a car made by others, fuelled by petrol bought with money given to me by others.
I contemplated these points and I felt like I was just a part of a process in which all living beings are bound up. Everything I have comes from others, and always has. I thought ‘how can I every repay you?’ and rested my mind on this point for a while.
Finally I decided that I needed to cherish everyone as much as I cherish myself, because they are so kind, and so precious.
I meditated on this point for the rest of the session.
May all living beings remember the kindness of others, and naturally cherish everyone equally.
Practice in the Meditation Break
I will cherish others as much as I cherish myself, always seeing their good qualities.
