The purpose of this meditation is to generate a complete feeling of cherishing all living beings in samsara.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation, and then started thinking of how all the happiness in this world comes from cherishing others. I thought of how sometimes we can find it easy to cherish someone we initially disliked once we get to know them. I have found out things about people at work which are truly wonderful, and have completely changed my view of them.

cherishing othersI contemplated this and thought ‘probably, everyone I know has done things in their past that are wonderful, generous, incredible, inspiring and gloriously beneficial. Why wait to find it out before cherishing them? Cherish them now!’

With that in mind I generated a sincere feeling of cherishing all my family, my friends, my colleagues at work, my neighbours and all living beings in the world.

I then extended this further and cherished the gods, the demi-gods, animals, hungry ghosts and hell beings. They are all the same – they have all done wonderful things and deserve my undying cherishing love.

I focused for as long as I could on cherishing all living beings in the six realms of samsara. I felt like I was completely mixed with a mind of cherishing love. It was lovely. I also appreciated how protected I felt. How can I feel threatened by someone whom I cherish so dearly? How can I feel dislike towards them, or anger? With these minds unable to arise, I am protected from feeling unhappy – how beautiful!

May all living beings cherish the beings of the six realms perfectly, and quickly attain enlightenment for the benefit of all.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will try to maintain this feeling throughout the meditation break.
