The purpose of this meditation is to get a strong feeling for cherishing others.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then thought about a conversation I had had today. I was speaking to a work colleague of mentioned in passing that she was a foster carer. In the UK, foster carers are people who take in children who are without parents or who cannot live at home, for whatever reason. I asked her why she became a foster carer and she replied that her strong Christian faith led her to put her wish to help others into practice.

I thought about how wonderful it is to be so driven to help others that we take them into our family home and care for them as if they were our own family.

I focused on the wish to cherish others – to feel with all my heart that they are important and that their freedom and happiness are important. It filled my mind with peace and love, and I focused on it for the rest of the meditation. When I realised that my attention was wandering, I brought it back to the object.

May we all develop the wish to cherish others from the bottom of our hearts.

Practice in the meditation break

I will try to keep a cherishing heart towards all living beings.
