The purpose of this meditation is strengthen our wish to purify our past negative actions.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then started by thinking about how all my negative actions have created potentialities for me to experience suffering in the future. I thought about all the negative actions I have created, and imagined that the suffering was gathering behind me like a massive wave about to crash down on me. It will definitely crash down on me. The problems I have at the moment are nothing compared to what waits in store.
I thought about this for a while and then decided that I need to purify this negative potential before the wave crashes down on me. I thought about the ten non-virtuous actions and confessed to the Buddhas all my actions which come under these headings:
- Sexual Misconduct
- Hurtful speech
- Divisive speech
- Idle chatter
- Malice, and
- Wrong views.
I then imagined that through the power of my reliance upon my Spiritual Guide, all the negativities associated with each of the ten non-virtuous actions in turn was purified. In the end I felt like a tremendous weight had been lifted from my shoulders – I felt purified.
Now I needed to not create any more non-virtuous actions. I imagined a pure reservoir of potentiality, and adding to it with more pure actions, like adding water to water. I mixed my mind with this feeling and stayed with it for the rest of the meditation.
May I and all living beings purify all their negative karma before the wave of suffering crashes upon us.
