The purpose of this mediation is to develop the sincere wish and intention to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings.

middleI began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then called to mind that my friends are all discontent. I am 46 and most of my friends are in the same age group. When we talk, it is clear to me that most of them are struggling to get some meaning out of their lives.

They have gone through the education whirlwind, and then completed the post-university chartership path, so now they are fully qualified and doing well in their careers.

They have gone through the get married, settle down, have kids whirlwind. Now their kids are in their teens, and looking to become independent from their parents. Already thinking about A-levels and University.

And my friends are left thinking – what is this life all about? The distractions of education and home life are starting to ease off, and they realise that they are almost 50 years old, and they have no clue what they want from life or how to get it.

I thought about how I need to be their link to meaning. If they cannot find meaning, perhaps I can provide it, or show them where it can be found.

I thought ‘I must become an enlightened being because then I will know perfectly how to help each of my friends, and all other living beings to be happy.’ I focused on this thought as the object of my meditation, and placed my mind on this wish. Slowly I realised that what I am going to do is leave the illusion of my ‘self’ behind, and completely mix with all living beings simultaneously. I will be with them all, all the time, able to help them every moment of every day. I mixed my mind with this feeling, and stayed with it for as long as possible.

May all living beings find meaning in their lives.

Practice in the Meditation Break

I will continue to try to remember my wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all throughout all my actions.
