The purpose of this meditation is to spend some time contemplating our possible future lives.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then started by remembering that death is certain and that my future lives could start at any moment. What will those future lives hold for me?
My future lives will arise as easily as the dream I had last night. Without effort the reality of my future life will appear to me, and because of my self-grasping I shall instinctively believe that it is inherently existent. I may be born as an animal. I spent some time thinking about what it would be like to be an animal, and then contemplated:
My future lives will be as real as this one. It is through great good fortune that I have this human life, but in my future lives I may be reborn as an animal, and experience animal sufferings, and accumulate only negative karma.
I contemplated my predicament in future lives, and developed a deep disquiet about the prospect.
May all living beings develop fear, but not anxiety, about future lives.
Practice in the Meditation Break
I will try to remember the fear in the pit of my stomach about the dangers of lower rebirth.
