The purpose of this meditation is to firmly decide to cherish only others.

I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then contemplated as follows:

Self-cherishing is the root of all my suffering, whereas cherishing others brings immediate happiness and is the direct path to liberation and full enlightenment.The Buddhas all freed themselves from self-cherishing and decided to cherish only others, and now they experience bliss constantly, and help other living beings throughout all their lives.

I thought about this carefully and decided that I too want to make the decision to abandon self-cherishing and cherish only others. I want to follow the path that all the Buddhas have trod. I will cherish only others.

As the decision became firm, it felt like the iron band of self-cherishing around me had melted away, and the cherishing love in my heart was able to expand to encompass the whole universe, and all the living beings in it. I felt like I cherished each and every living being. I focused on this feeling for the rest of the meditation.


May all living beings follow the path of the Buddhas.
