The purpose of this meditation is to generate a very strong wish to engage in the six perfections.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then brought to mind the explanation provided by Geshe Kelsang in his book ‘How to Understand the Mind’.
Geshe Kelsang explains the six perfections, but on this reading, it was the overall contemplation that moved my mind the most. We think:
Just as all the previous sugatas generated the precious mind of Bodhichitta, and accomplished all the stages of the Bodhisattva training, so will I to for the benefit of all living beings, generate the precious mind of Bodhichitta and accomplish all the stages of the Bodhisattva path.
I repeated this contemplation over and over again, it becoming a firm promise from my heart. I felt like I was following in the footsteps of the Buddhas – walking on the path they have travelled. I felt very joyful, and also humble. It felt very meaningful because I was promising to attain the state beyond sorrow – the true meaning of life – and also the ability to help all other living beings do the same. It was very moving, and a beautiful experience.
May all living beings generate the precious mind of Bodhichitta and accomplish all the stages of the Bodhisattva training – the training in the six perfections.
Practice in the Meditation Break
I will try to remember my promise – my path.
