The purpose of this meditation is to generate the strong wish to attain permanent freedom from samsara.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then contemplated:
Attaining human rebirths in future lives is not enough. I will still have to undergo many sufferings. Instead of working towards temporary happiness, I must strive to attain permanent freedom from samsara – nirvana.
Without worrying too much about how I will do this, I set my mind firmly on the thought ‘I want permanent freedom, not temporary freedom’. Rather dramatically, I felt like I was standing looking out across a black landscape, with a look of determination on my face. I felt ready for any challenge – there was nothing that would stop me. I soaked my mind in the belief and feeling of being certain that I want permanent freedom from suffering.
May all living beings strive for permanent freedom from suffering.
Practice in the Meditation Break
I will try to remember my determined feeling.
