The purpose of this lovely meditation is to generate a strong wish to cherish other living beings.
I began by making the appropriate preparations for meditation and then started by considering that the path to enlightenment begins with cherishing others. Our normal view is that we are most important, but the view of all the enlightened beings is that it is others who are most important.
We instinctively feel that we are the most important person in the world, and everything we have are the most important things in the world. This is because they belong to us. Other people and things seem far less important.
But for those who wish to attain enlightenment, it is other living beings which are the most important things in the universe. Other living beings act as the objects of our love and compassion, and the problems they cause give us the opportunity to practice patience. In this way they are the most useful things we could possibly have, and therefore they are very kind.
Without other living beings there is no possibility of us making progress upon the spiritual path.
I contemplated these points, and reached the conclusion that I must cherish all living beings because they are so kind to me, and they are completely essential to my spiritual development.
May all living beings see the value in others.
