“It makes me happy”.

“I can’t help it – he makes me angry”.

It’s like we think of ourselves as vending machines like this one in the office I was in this week. If we put in 70p and choose C8 we’ll get a Mars bar.

But we aren’t vending machines, bound to automatically respond in the same way again and again to external stimuli. We are humans and we can learn to separate our responses from our stimuli.

If we want to find freedom from suffering we can learn to choose our mind instead of letting our habitual bad habits choose them for us. When we are faced with difficult situations, we can learn to choose patience over anger.

May all living beings learn to choose their minds.
