On a chilly Wednesday morning I really appreciated the kindness of the unknown person who put grit down on the ground in this car park. They must have done it in the dark, in the cold, all alone, for the benefit of others.

We could say ‘that is their job, they don’t need to be thought of kindly. And in any case, they did no not know me, so they did not intend to do me any kindness’.

These are unhelpful and ungrateful attitudes which do no-one any good. Although it is true that this person was doing their job and does not know me personally, nevertheless I have benefited from their actions and therefore from my perspective they have been kind to me.

I rejoice in the kindness of all living beings.
